The next City Council meeting is Tue, Feb 20th.  Speak to Council is at 6:30pm.  Call 311 to get on the list to speak.  The more things change the more they stay the same with our City government.  We also discuss the state of our local minor league sports teams and how we can keep them solvent.

We update the Cobbs Hill Development project as well as Rochester's point system.  It's all ridiculous.  With the bad news about downtown, we look at Amazon's Hunger Game to improve our city.

Why hasn't the brownfield cleanup in the PLEX neighborhood taken place yet?  Ask ExxonMobil.  How can we help one of the poorest sections of the City?  Then, we win by losing.  Amazon is NOT coming to Rochester.

Housing is a human right.  The problem of Southview Towers is an indication that we need to look at housing differently.  We also look at the Silvon Simmons situation in terms of what RPD does and how our local judicial system works.

Alex White is running for Mayor

It is true I am once more running for Mayor and I am doing so because Rochester is getting worse not better.  Poverty is up from 30% in 2011 to 33% in 2016.  We have more than 3000 vacant properties in our neighborhoods, our schools still fail more than half our children, and we keep giving away more and more to rich developers to building housing like Eastman Garden Apartments which was given $600,000 in cash and then $18 million in tax breaks to create 52 senior apartments.

Conflicts of interests in Finger Lakes Region Economic Development Council.

In the rush of the holiday seasons you might have missed the announcement of the winners of New York States regional  economic development hunger games.  If you did notice then you know our region did well getting $80.7 million in aid for our area. Unfortunately this is only part of the story.  What seems to have escaped notice by the press are the numerous conflicts of interest present in this award.

For 5 years now Cuomo has made different regions compete for economic development money. The state is divided up into 10 regions each with their own economic development council composed of the political and economic leaders of the area.  This group then chooses projects to include in their bid for funds and the state then chooses what to fund. 

This process was put in place by Cuomo to make economic development more effective through the magic of competition.  It is hard to tell weather competition is working in economic development it seems conflicts of interests abound.  In the Finger lakes region alone 8 of the 33 awards announced have a direct connection to board members.
